Abstract
Lichen planus (LP) is a common inflammatory disorder that affects the genital and oral mucosa as well as their attachments. This lesion presents clinically in six different types: reticular, plaque, papular, atrophic, bullous, and erosive. Bullous lichen planus is a rare variant of lichen planus. Its clinical features include vesicles or blisters, tend to rupture. The erosive type is the most clinically significant because it presents as lesions with painful symptoms and has a greater potential for malignancy. The aim of this paper is to report two cases of lichen planus—one of the bullous type and the other of the erosive type, as well as to present a literature review on the subject. The first case corresponds to a man, 40 years old, who presented the main complaint of recurrent bilateral "blisters" in the cheek mucosa for three months. After the clinical examination and histopathological exams, bullous lichen planus was diagnosed. The second case, corresponding to the erosive lichen planus, affected a woman, leucoderma, 56 years old, with lesions in the lower lip, cheek mucosa and in the inserted gum, and in these last two places the lesion was observed bilaterally. Therefore, the LP can present different clinical patterns, consequently, the variation in treatment from one type to another is justified by the different degrees of aggressiveness between them. That said, awareness of this injury, as well as technical preparation linked to the dentist's scientific knowledge, is essential not only for diagnosis, but also for clinical management.
